This month, Slate is republishing some of our favorite stories. Here’s today’s selection: This beautiful and chilling seven-part series from 2014 documents the writer’s gradual, then rapid, loss of mental functioning after she is diagnosed with dementia in her early 60s. I keep coming back to it whenever I’m asked to point to a Slate piece that’s stuck with me: It exemplifies a type of ambitiously poetic writing that doesn’t appear often in this magazine, but that lyricism is both matched and earned by the piece’s emotional power, its learning, its tonal variety, and its structural invention. The writer incorporates her mother’s diaries (she was also an Alzheimer’s sufferer), proverbs, scientific research, Don Quixote, folktales, the Bible, and Einstein’s letters. The effect is of a desperate mind reaching out to grasp everything it can.—Katy Waldman
